  2. I disagree. From a public health standpoint, policy makers’ efforts to motivate people to quit by raising the taxes on cigarettes have primarily targeted low income groups, since they are more tax responsive. Therefore, they may reduce the numbers of cigarette they smoke or quit all together.
From economical viewpoint, raising taxes on item such as cigarette helps government to fund essential improvement projects to roads, public transportation, public safety, etc....Arshin

  3. i agree, the American Government should not raise high taxes on cigarettes.By putting taxes on cigarettes the government mainly targets young smokers, since they won't be able to afford any cigarette if the price is high, but as long as you are addicted to cigarette i think those taxes are just useless.....brianna

  4. I totally disagree! I think that cigarettes are a joke. Its and deadly addicting habbit that does a number of only negative things to a smokers body and the other who have to breath it. So if you want to ruin our lungs with your second hand smoke you need to pay for it.

  5. I would have to disagree, high prices make smokers reconsider smoking, and the high prices also help government funding

  6. I totally disagree with this. I think smoking is bad in the first place and if you raise taxes for smokers it will be an incentive to quit smoking. VM.

  7. I disagree. Taxes should be raised on cigarettes. Plain and simple, smoking is bad for you. I think people should have to pay a lot for something that endangers their own health and the health of others around them through second hand smoke.

  8. I'm torn, I think raising taxes on ciggarettes raises lot of money for many programs. But what are these progams, do we even know? Whos getting this money? At the same time it doesn't solve the problem. Smokers are addicted and will continue to pay for their drug as long as they can possibly afford it. If the government is going to raise taxes on ciggarettes than they need to raise taxes on alcohol and anyother product that is deemed bad or unhealthy for you such as junk food. -Jennifer

  9. I think that high taxes on cigarettes hinders teens and college students from purchasing them but doesn't really hinder people who are older and have a lot more stress and responsibility in their lives.

  11. I am not sure where I stand on this statement. I think people who smoke cigarettes will keep purchasing them no matter what which makes raising taxes pointless in this sense. However I do not like when people smoke cigarettes because of personal experiences with my father.

  12. I am on the fence about this issue. Raising taxes on cigarettes does cut consumption down, which reduces the risk of smoking related diseases for our population. This will be a difficult point of view to argue, make sure to state your points clearly and in an organized manner. I look forward to hearing what you have to say!

  13. I do not agree with the thesis. While raising tobacco tax may exacerbate the problem of cigarette smuggling, the effect of it should not be overlooked. Some people would really rather quit smoking. My grandfather is an example. At the end of the day, smoking is bad for our health. While people clearly understand that, they need a more tangible disadvantage and raising tobacco tax will do just that. - Noreen

  14. I disagree. Cigarettes are documented as being unhealthy and are a person’s choice. Increasing taxes on these kinds of choices may discourage and penalize people that are making these choices. There needs to be greater awareness to those who are surrounded about second hand smoke and the impact that it has on them. The increase could help those with basic needs. Submitted by Allan.

  15. I am undecided, I do believe smoking is bad and will increase the chance that people will decrease the amount they smoke or quit but a lot wont, they will just pay the price. I heard all the cons to raising the price in your speech and it makes a good point as well. But I do not support smoking in the first place.

  16. I am too undecided. Smoking is bad and creates a lot of health problems for people. High taxes or not people will pay the price to get them.

  17. I'm also undecided on this thesis because I'm curious as to what other "unhealthy habits" have higher taxes. Although many of us know smoking is unhealthy, I'm wondering why cigarettes should have higher taxes then other things... - Jamie

  18. I disagree, because I do not see the advantages of smoking at all. It must affect not only smokers but also people around smokers. -Shuntaro

  19. I think it depends on what they plan to do with the money!

  20. I am also not sure of my stance on this statement. First of all cigarette, just like alcohol, is legal but may be harmful to an individual's health. So if raise cigarette tax, should we also raise alcohol tax as well? But raise tax on cigarette would be a strong contribution to the economy and reduce the number of smokers. So I am indecisive on this issue.

  21. I disagree, I think that there is a lot of health problems in america and the government wants to stop it, as well as get people to stop smoking, this could very well be one of the ways they are trying to do that. Plus it would raise the economy in the nation and bring in more money.-A.C.

  22. I agree, I hate smoking but I am STRONGLY against the idea of the government extorting a single demographic simply because they are unpopular in the contemporary culture.
